Panthers and Oilers turn to poker and Mario Kart on long flights in the Stanley Cup Final

The Stanley Cup Final has brought together two teams with a shared love for poker and Mario Kart. As the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers travel between cities for the series, they have found a way to pass the time and bond over these popular games.

On long flights, the players have been seen huddled around tables, shuffling cards and placing bets. According to Panthers defenseman, Aaron Ekblad, poker has become a staple activity for the team during their travels. “It’s a great way for us to relax and have some fun together,” he says.

But it’s not just poker that has captured the attention of these athletes. Mario Kart, a popular racing game, has also become a favorite pastime for the players. Oilers forward, Connor McDavid, admits that he and his teammates have been known to have some intense races on the team’s Nintendo Switch.

While these games may seem like simple forms of entertainment, they have actually helped to build camaraderie and team chemistry. As Panthers coach, Joel Quenneville, explains, “It’s important for our players to have a strong bond off the ice, and these games have definitely helped with that.”

But it’s not just the players who have been getting in on the action. Coaches and staff members have also joined in on the fun, creating a sense of unity within the entire organization.

In addition to fostering team spirit, these games have also provided a much-needed break from the intense pressure of the Stanley Cup Final. As Oilers defenseman, Darnell Nurse, puts it, “It’s a great way for us to unwind and take our minds off the game for a bit.”

As the series continues, it’s clear that these games will continue to be a source of entertainment and bonding for both teams. And who knows, maybe a friendly game of poker or Mario Kart will even help determine the outcome of the Stanley Cup Final.
