NATO allies pledge new air defence systems for Ukraine to ‘stop Putin’

Ukraine’s air defence capabilities were a key topic of discussion at the recent NATO summit, as tensions continue to rise between the country and its neighbor, Russia.

During the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for increased support from NATO in strengthening the country’s air defence systems. He highlighted the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, where Russian-backed separatists have been fighting Ukrainian forces since 2014.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine’s air defence capabilities are crucial in protecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also expressed concern over Russia’s recent military buildup near the Ukrainian border, which has raised fears of a potential invasion.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg echoed Zelensky’s concerns and reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to Ukraine’s security. He stated that NATO stands with Ukraine and will continue to provide political and practical support, including through the Comprehensive Assistance Package.

The Comprehensive Assistance Package, launched in 2016, aims to help Ukraine reform and modernize its defence and security sector. It includes support for the development of air defence capabilities, as well as training and exercises with NATO forces.

In addition to the discussions on air defence, the NATO summit also addressed other security challenges facing Ukraine, such as cyber threats and disinformation campaigns. Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of countering these threats and reaffirmed NATO’s support for Ukraine’s efforts in this regard.

The summit concluded with a joint statement from NATO leaders, reaffirming their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also expressed concern over Russia’s actions and called on the country to de-escalate tensions and engage in constructive dialogue.

In conclusion, the NATO summit highlighted the importance of Ukraine’s air defence capabilities in ensuring its security and sovereignty. The alliance’s continued support for Ukraine, both politically and practically, sends a strong message to Russia and reaffirms NATO’s commitment to the region’s stability.
