The province of British Columbia mourns the loss of a true hero and philanthropist, John Hillman, who passed away at the remarkable age of 105. Hillman, a World War II veteran, dedicated his life to serving his country and giving back to his community.

Hillman was born in Vancouver in 1916 and joined the Canadian Army in 1940. He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers and was stationed in England, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands during the war. He was a part of the D-Day invasion and was awarded the Legion of Honour by the French government for his bravery and service.

After the war, Hillman returned to Canada and settled in Burnaby, B.C. He worked as a carpenter and was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He also became a dedicated volunteer for the BC Children’s Hospital, raising thousands of dollars for the charity through his annual poppy campaign.

Hillman’s commitment to helping children in need was unwavering. He would often be seen standing outside local businesses, rain or shine, selling poppies and collecting donations for the hospital. His dedication to serving his country and his community is an inspiration to us all. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private funeral service will be held for Hillman, with full military honours, at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 83 in Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the BC Children’s Hospital in Hillman’s memory.

The passing of John Hillman is a great loss for British Columbia, but his legacy will continue to shine bright through the lives he has impacted and the children he has helped. Rest in peace, John Hillman. Your service and generosity will never be forgotten.
