Senecal, stout defence lead Montreal Carabins to 16-9 Vanier Cup win over UBC

The Montreal Carabins have emerged victorious in the 2021 Vanier Cup, thanks to a strong performance from quarterback Adam Sinagra and a stout defence led by linebacker Marc-Antoine Senecal.

In a hard-fought battle against the University of British Columbia (UBC), the Carabins came out on top with a final score of 16-9. The game, which took place at the Telus Stadium in Quebec City, was a thrilling display of skill and determination from both teams.

Sinagra, who was named the game’s Most Valuable Player, threw for 292 yards and one touchdown, leading the Carabins to their second Vanier Cup victory in the past four years. The fifth-year quarterback showed poise and precision throughout the game, making crucial plays and leading his team to victory.

But it wasn’t just Sinagra who shone on the field. The Carabins’ defence, led by Senecal, put on a dominant performance, holding UBC to just nine points and forcing multiple turnovers. Senecal, who was named the game’s Defensive Player of the Year, was a force to be reckoned with, making key tackles and disrupting UBC’s offence.

The game started off with a strong showing from UBC, who took an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter. But the Carabins quickly responded with a touchdown from receiver Kevin Kaya, giving them a 7-3 lead. UBC fought back with a field goal, but the Carabins’ defence held strong, preventing them from scoring any more points in the first half.

In the third quarter, the Carabins extended their lead with a field goal from kicker Louis-Philippe Simoneau. UBC answered back with another field goal, but the Carabins’ defence continued to hold strong, preventing them from scoring a touchdown.

In the fourth quarter, the Carabins sealed their victory with another field goal from Simoneau, giving them a 16-9 lead. UBC made a valiant effort to come back, but the Carabins’ defence shut them down, securing the win and the Vanier Cup.

The victory was a sweet one for the Carabins, who had lost in the Vanier Cup final just two years ago. But this time, they were determined to come out on top, and with the leadership of Sinagra and Senecal, they were able to do just that.

After the game, Sinagra expressed his joy and gratitude, saying, “It’s an amazing feeling to win the Vanier Cup. We worked so hard all season, and it’s an incredible feeling to see it all pay off.”

The Carabins’ head coach, Danny Maciocia, also praised his team’s performance, saying, “I couldn’t be prouder of these players. They showed incredible resilience and determination throughout the game, and it’s a testament to their hard work and dedication.”

The Vanier Cup victory marks the end of a successful season for the Carabins, who finished with a record of 9-1. They will now look to build on this success and continue their winning ways in the years to come.
