USC’s standout basketball player and Mission Bay High School graduate, Jonah Hooper, recently shared his thoughts on the significance of playing in a highly anticipated game in his hometown.
Hooper, a 6-foot-8 forward, has been a key player for the USC Trojans this season, averaging 12.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He has also been a standout player since his high school days at Mission Bay, where he was named the San Diego Section Player of the Year in 2019.
Now, as a junior at USC, Hooper is set to face off against the University of San Diego in a marquee matchup at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, just a few miles from where he grew up.
In an interview with KUSI News, Hooper expressed his excitement for the game and the opportunity to play in front of his family and friends. He also acknowledged the significance of returning to his hometown as a college athlete.
“It’s definitely a special feeling to be able to come back home and play in front of my family and friends,” Hooper said. “I’ve been looking forward to this game for a long time.”
Hooper also reflected on his time at Mission Bay and how it prepared him for the level of competition he faces at USC.
“Playing at Mission Bay definitely helped me develop as a player and prepared me for the college level,” he said. “I had great coaches and teammates who pushed me to be the best player I could be.”
The matchup between USC and USD is expected to draw a large crowd, with many fans eager to see Hooper play in person. Hooper acknowledged the support from his community and expressed his gratitude for their continued support.
“It means a lot to have the support of my hometown,” he said. “I’m grateful for all the people who have helped me get to where I am today.”

“We know it’s going to be a tough game, but we’re ready for the challenge,” Hooper said. “We’re going to give it our all and hopefully come out with a win for our team and our hometown.”
In addition to Hooper, there will be another familiar face on the court for the Trojans. His former high school teammate, Boogie Ellis, is now a sophomore guard for USC and will also be playing in front of his hometown crowd.
