A police officer in Laval, Quebec was struck by a car on Highway 15 during a pursuit on Monday evening.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 8:30pm when the officer was attempting to stop a vehicle on the highway. The driver of the vehicle refused to pull over and instead accelerated, leading the officer on a pursuit.
During the chase, the officer was struck by the suspect’s car. The impact caused the officer to fall to the ground and suffer minor injuries. The suspect then fled the scene, leaving the injured officer behind.
Emergency services were immediately called to the scene and the officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Thankfully, their injuries were not life-threatening and they are expected to make a full recovery.
The suspect’s vehicle was later found abandoned in a nearby parking lot. Police are currently searching for the driver and have asked for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect.
The incident caused a section of Highway 15 to be closed for several hours as police conducted their investigation. The highway has since been reopened to traffic.
This is not the first time a police officer has been injured in the line of duty in Laval. In October, an officer was struck by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop. They sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized for several weeks.
The Laval Police Department has reminded drivers to always obey traffic laws and to pull over when signaled by an officer. Fleeing from a police officer is a serious offense and can result in severe consequences.
The investigation into Monday’s incident is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact the Laval Police Department. The department has also expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support and well wishes for the injured officer.
