The BMO Centre in Calgary is set to undergo a major expansion, with plans to double its current size and become the largest convention center in Western Canada.
The expansion project, which is estimated to cost $500 million, will add 500,000 square feet of space to the existing facility. This will include a new 100,000 square foot exhibition hall, a 50,000 square foot ballroom, and additional meeting rooms and pre-function spaces.
The BMO Centre, which is currently 500,000 square feet, is already a popular destination for conventions, trade shows, and other events. However, with the growing demand for larger and more modern event spaces, the expansion is seen as a necessary step to keep up with the competition.
The project is expected to create over 1,800 jobs during construction and an additional 500 jobs once the expansion is complete. It is also estimated to generate an economic impact of $223 million annually for the city of Calgary.
The expansion will not only benefit the local economy, but it will also bring in more visitors and business opportunities for the city. With the added space, the BMO Centre will be able to attract larger events and conventions, which will in turn bring in more tourism and revenue for local businesses.
The new exhibition hall will be able to accommodate up to 5,000 people, making it the largest in Western Canada. This will allow for bigger and more diverse events to be held at the BMO Centre, attracting a wider range of industries and organizations.
In addition to the physical expansion, the BMO Centre will also undergo technological upgrades to enhance the overall experience for attendees. This includes state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment, high-speed internet, and digital signage throughout the facility.
The expansion project is a joint effort between the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) and the Calgary Stampede, with support from the City of Calgary and the Government of Alberta. The CMLC, which is responsible for the development of the East Village, will be overseeing the project.
Construction is set to begin in 2022 and is expected to be completed by 2024. The BMO Centre will remain open during the construction period, with minimal disruptions to events and operations.
The expansion of the BMO Centre is a significant investment in the future of Calgary’s economy and tourism industry. It will not only provide a boost to the local economy, but it will also solidify Calgary’s position as a top destination for events and conventions in Western Canada.
