Ajax, Ont. construction worker scanned $100,000 winning lottery ticket '13 times' to be sure

A construction worker in Ajax, Ontario was in for a big surprise when he scanned his lottery ticket and realized he had won $100,000. The lucky winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, recounted the moment he discovered his win.

The construction worker had purchased his ticket at a local convenience store and decided to scan it at a self-checkout machine while on his lunch break. When the machine displayed a message to “see retailer,” he knew something was up.

“I thought maybe I had won a free ticket or a small prize,” the worker said. “But when I showed the ticket to the retailer, he told me to go to the OLG (Ontario Lottery and Gaming) office right away.”

The worker was skeptical at first and decided to scan the ticket again, just to be sure. To his amazement, the machine displayed the same message. He then scanned the ticket a total of 13 times, each time receiving the same message.

“I couldn’t believe it,” the worker said. “I was in shock and had to scan the ticket multiple times to make sure it was real.”

After confirming his win, the worker immediately called his wife to share the good news. “She didn’t believe me at first,” he said. “But when I showed her the ticket, she was just as shocked as I was.”

The couple plans to use the money to pay off some bills and save for their children’s education. They also plan to treat themselves to a nice vacation once it is safe to travel again.

The retailer who sold the winning ticket was also thrilled to hear the news. “I was so happy for him,” he said. “It’s always exciting to see someone win big.”

The OLG encourages all lottery players to check their tickets carefully and to sign the back of their tickets as soon as they are purchased. This ensures that the rightful owner can claim their prize.

The construction worker is grateful for his win and plans to continue playing the lottery. “You never know when luck will strike,” he said. “I’m just glad I decided to scan my ticket that day.”
