SIU probing after man allegedly shot dead by police in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation after a man was fatally shot by police in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

According to the SIU, the incident occurred on Sunday evening when officers responded to a call about a man who was allegedly armed and causing a disturbance at a residence on Albert Street West.

Upon arrival, the officers reportedly encountered the man, who was armed with a weapon. The SIU states that “an interaction” took place between the man and the officers, during which the man was shot.

The man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released at this time.

The SIU has assigned six investigators and three forensic investigators to the case. They will be examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and interviewing any potential witnesses.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police officers in which there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault. They are responsible for determining whether there are grounds to lay criminal charges against the officers involved.
