One example is the owner of a vacation home in Kelowna, who has seen a significant decrease in bookings since the start of the pandemic. However, she has implemented enhanced cleaning procedures and offers flexible cancellation policies to reassure guests and maintain their trust.

The City of Kelowna has also taken steps to support short-term rental owners during this difficult time. They have waived the annual business license fee for short-term rentals and have extended the deadline for renewals to September 30th.

Despite these efforts, there are still concerns about the impact of short-term rentals on the local housing market. Some argue that the decrease in tourism has created an opportunity for these properties to be used as long-term rentals, which could help alleviate the city’s housing shortage.
