The Montreal Alouettes kicked off their CFL campaign with a dominant 27-12 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday night.
The Alouettes’ defense was the star of the game, holding the Blue Bombers to just 12 points and forcing four turnovers. They also recorded five sacks and limited Winnipeg’s offense to only 265 total yards.
Montreal’s offense was led by quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., who completed 14 of 24 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Running back William Stanback also had a strong performance, rushing for 118 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
The Blue Bombers struggled to find their rhythm on offense, with quarterback Zach Collaros completing only 18 of 33 passes for 189 yards and one interception. Running back Andrew Harris was held to just 53 yards on 13 carries.
The Alouettes took an early lead in the first quarter with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Adams to Jake Wieneke. They extended their lead in the second quarter with a 23-yard field goal from David Cote and a 1-yard touchdown run from Stanback.
Winnipeg finally got on the board in the third quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run from Harris, but Montreal responded with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Adams to Eugene Lewis.
The Blue Bombers attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, with a 1-yard touchdown run from Brady Oliveira, but it was not enough to overcome Montreal’s strong defense.
The Alouettes’ victory marks a promising start to their season, while the Blue Bombers will need to regroup and improve their performance in the coming weeks.
Next up, the Alouettes will face the Edmonton Elks on August 14, while the Blue Bombers will take on the Toronto Argonauts on August 12.
