After being closed for over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Columbia Icefield in Jasper National Park is set to reopen on Friday, according to Parks Canada.
The popular tourist destination, which features the Athabasca Glacier and the Glacier Skywalk, has been closed since March 2020 in order to comply with public health measures and ensure the safety of visitors and staff.
Parks Canada has been working closely with local Indigenous communities, as well as provincial and federal health authorities, to develop a reopening plan that prioritizes the health and well-being of all individuals involved.
Visitors can expect some changes when they arrive at the Columbia Icefield. Capacity will be limited and all visitors will be required to purchase tickets in advance. Face masks will also be mandatory in all indoor spaces and on the Glacier Skywalk.
In addition, enhanced cleaning and sanitization measures will be in place, and physical distancing protocols will be enforced throughout the site.
Parks Canada is also reminding visitors to plan ahead and be prepared for their visit. This includes checking the weather forecast, bringing appropriate clothing and footwear, and being aware of any potential hazards in the area.
The reopening of the Columbia Icefield is a positive step towards the recovery of the tourism industry in Jasper National Park. It is expected to bring economic benefits to the local community and provide visitors with the opportunity to experience the beauty and wonder of the Canadian Rockies.
Parks Canada is committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors, and will continue to monitor and adjust their operations as needed in accordance with public health guidelines.
