The Rural Municipality of St. François Xavier is celebrating its 200th anniversary by embracing and sharing its Métis history. The community is coming together to commemorate the roots that have shaped their identity and culture.
The RM of St. François Xavier, located just west of Winnipeg, has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s when Métis families settled in the area. The community has always been proud of its Métis heritage, but now they are taking steps to ensure that this history is shared and celebrated by all.
According to RM of St. François Xavier Mayor, Dwayne Clark, it is important to recognize and acknowledge the contributions of the Métis people to the development of the community. He believes that by sharing this history, they can create a stronger sense of unity and understanding among all residents.
One of the initiatives taken by the RM of St. François Xavier is the installation of a Métis flag at the municipal office. This flag serves as a symbol of the community’s commitment to embracing and honoring their Métis roots. In addition, the RM has also partnered with the Manitoba Métis Federation to create a commemorative plaque that will be placed at the entrance of the municipality.
The RM of St. François Xavier is also planning a series of events and activities throughout the year to celebrate their Métis heritage. This includes a virtual tour of Métis historical sites, a Métis cultural festival, and a community feast featuring traditional Métis cuisine.
The community’s efforts to embrace and share their Métis history have been met with enthusiasm and support from residents. Local Métis elder, Norman Fleury, expressed his gratitude for the recognition of their culture and history. He believes that this will help educate future generations about the important role of the Métis people in the development of the RM of St. François Xavier.
The RM of St. François Xavier’s celebration of their 200th anniversary is not only a milestone for the community, but also a testament to the importance of acknowledging and preserving Métis history. By sharing their roots, the community hopes to create a stronger and more inclusive future for all residents.
