Calgary's mayor asks province to salvage parts of halted Green Line transit project

Calgary’s Mayor, Naheed Nenshi, has made a formal request to the provincial government to salvage parts of the Green Line transit project, which was recently halted due to budget concerns.

In a letter addressed to Alberta’s Minister of Transportation, Ric McIver, Mayor Nenshi expressed his disappointment and concern over the decision to pause the construction of the Green Line, a major public transit project that has been in the works for years.

The Mayor highlighted the importance of the Green Line in providing much-needed transportation options for Calgarians, especially those living in the city’s southeast and north-central areas. He also emphasized the economic benefits of the project, which is estimated to create thousands of jobs and stimulate economic growth in the region.

Mayor Nenshi acknowledged the financial challenges faced by the province, but urged the government to consider alternative solutions to keep the Green Line project moving forward. He suggested exploring options such as phasing the project or seeking additional funding from other levels of government.

The Mayor also pointed out that the City of Calgary has already invested significant resources and funds into the Green Line, and halting the project now would result in a waste of time and money.

In response to the Mayor’s request, Minister McIver stated that the provincial government is committed to working with the City of Calgary to find a solution that is financially responsible and meets the needs of Calgarians.

The Green Line project, which was initially estimated to cost $4.9 billion, has faced several challenges and delays since its inception. The recent pause in construction was due to concerns over the project’s ballooning costs, which have now reached $5.5 billion.

Despite the setbacks, Mayor Nenshi remains optimistic about the future of the Green Line and is determined to find a way to salvage the project. He believes that with collaboration and creative thinking, the Green Line can still become a reality and benefit the city and its residents.

The provincial government has yet to make a decision on the Mayor’s request, but both parties have expressed a willingness to work together to find a solution that will benefit all stakeholders involved.
