After a lengthy investigation, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have successfully dismantled what is being called Canada’s largest superlab. The operation, which spanned multiple provinces, resulted in the seizure of a significant amount of illegal drugs and the arrest of several individuals. However, despite the magnitude of the operation, only one person has been charged so far.
The superlab, located in Burnaby, British Columbia, was believed to be responsible for producing and distributing large quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl. The RCMP, along with assistance from local police forces, executed search warrants at multiple locations in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. This coordinated effort resulted in the seizure of over 120 kilograms of methamphetamine, 1.5 kilograms of fentanyl, and other illicit substances.
In addition to the drugs, the RCMP also seized over $1.5 million in cash, multiple firearms, and a significant amount of equipment used in the production of illegal drugs. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is over $10 million.
The investigation, dubbed “Project E-Prominent,” began in 2019 and involved multiple agencies, including the Canada Border Services Agency and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. The RCMP’s Federal Serious and Organized Crime unit led the operation, which involved over 300 officers.
Despite the success of the operation, only one person has been charged so far. 35-year-old Darcy Peter Bailey of Burnaby, British Columbia, has been charged with multiple drug-related offenses, including production and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Bailey is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on October 14.
The RCMP has stated that the investigation is ongoing, and more charges and arrests are expected in the coming weeks. They have also emphasized the importance of dismantling superlabs like this one, as they pose a significant threat to public safety and contribute to the ongoing opioid crisis in Canada.
