Winnipeg, MB – The iconic rock musical “Phantom of the Paradise” is celebrating its 50th anniversary in Winnipeg, marking a milestone for both the city and the film industry.

Originally released in 1974, “Phantom of the Paradise” was written and directed by Brian De Palma and starred Paul Williams, William Finley, and Jessica Harper. The film follows the story of a disfigured composer who seeks revenge on a music producer who stole his music and ruined his face.

The film gained a cult following over the years, with its unique blend of horror, comedy, and rock music. It also received critical acclaim, winning the Grand Prize at the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival and being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the film will be screened at the Winnipeg Cinematheque on January 31st, 2022. The event will also feature a Q&A session with Paul Williams, who not only starred in the film but also wrote the music and lyrics.

The event is organized by the Winnipeg Film Group, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting independent filmmakers in Manitoba. Executive Director Greg Klymkiw stated, “We are honored to host this special screening and Q&A session with Paul Williams. ‘Phantom of the Paradise’ is a beloved film in Winnipeg, and we are excited to bring it back to the big screen for its 50th anniversary.”
