A major bust in Athabasca has resulted in the recovery of millions of dollars worth of stolen vehicles and heavy equipment, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
The operation, which was carried out by the RCMP’s Auto Theft Unit and the Athabasca RCMP detachment, resulted in the seizure of 11 stolen vehicles and 10 pieces of heavy equipment. The estimated value of the recovered items is over $2 million.
The investigation began in October 2020, when the RCMP received a tip about a possible chop shop operating in the Athabasca area. A chop shop is a location where stolen vehicles are dismantled and their parts are sold for profit.
After months of surveillance and gathering evidence, the RCMP executed search warrants on two properties in Athabasca on December 9, 2020. The search resulted in the recovery of the stolen vehicles and heavy equipment, as well as numerous stolen vehicle parts.
Four individuals were arrested and are facing multiple charges, including possession of stolen property and trafficking in stolen property. They are scheduled to appear in court on February 10, 2021.
The RCMP is reminding the public to be cautious when purchasing used vehicles or equipment, as they may unknowingly be buying stolen goods. They recommend checking the vehicle identification number (VIN) with a registry or police agency before making a purchase.
This bust is a significant success for the RCMP and serves as a reminder that they are committed to combating auto theft and protecting the public from the dangers of chop shops. The investigation is ongoing and the RCMP is asking anyone with information to contact them at 780-675-5122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
