Calgary Mayor Invites Premier and MLAs on Walking Tour of Downtown Green Line Route
In an effort to showcase the progress and potential of the highly anticipated Green Line project, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi has extended an invitation to Premier Jason Kenney and other Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to join him on a walking tour of the downtown route.
The Green Line, a 46-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) line, is set to be the largest infrastructure project in Calgary’s history. It will connect communities from North to South, providing a much-needed alternative to the city’s congested roads and highways.
Mayor Nenshi believes that it is crucial for the provincial government to see the impact and importance of the Green Line firsthand. He stated, “I think it’s really important for the premier and the MLAs to see the route, to see the communities that will be impacted, and to see the potential for economic development and job creation.”
The walking tour will cover the downtown portion of the Green Line, which is expected to be completed by 2026. This section will run from 16 Avenue North to Shepard in the South, with 14 stations along the way. The tour will also include a visit to the future site of the Beltline station, which is expected to be a major hub for the LRT network.
Mayor Nenshi hopes that this tour will provide an opportunity for open dialogue and collaboration between the city and the provincial government. He emphasized the importance of working together to ensure the success of the Green Line project, stating, “We need to make sure that we’re all on the same page, that we’re all working together, and that we’re all committed to making this project a reality.”
The Green Line has faced some challenges and delays in the past, but Mayor Nenshi remains optimistic about its future. He believes that the project will not only improve transportation in the city but also bring economic benefits and create thousands of jobs.
The walking tour is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks, and Mayor Nenshi is looking forward to showing the progress and potential of the Green Line to the premier and MLAs. He hopes that this tour will further solidify the commitment of all parties involved to make the Green Line a reality for the benefit of all Calgarians.
