Tactical evacuations are currently underway as the BC Wildfire Service battles a wildfire behind the Kelowna International Airport.
According to reports, the fire was first spotted on Tuesday afternoon and has since grown to an estimated 15 hectares in size. The blaze is located in an area known as the Glenmore Landfill, which is situated just south of the airport.
As a precautionary measure, tactical evacuations have been initiated for the landfill and surrounding areas. This includes the evacuation of the Kelowna International Airport, which has been closed until further notice.
The BC Wildfire Service has deployed multiple resources to combat the fire, including air tankers, helicopters, and ground crews. They are working tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
In addition, the City of Kelowna has activated its Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate the response efforts. They are working closely with the BC Wildfire Service and other agencies to ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the affected areas.
As of now, there have been no reports of injuries or damage to structures. However, the situation is still ongoing and residents are advised to stay vigilant and follow the instructions of emergency personnel.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. However, with the hot and dry weather conditions in the region, it is crucial for everyone to exercise caution and follow all fire safety protocols.
