Ottawa Police Introduce New District Model to Enhance Community Policing
The Ottawa Police Service has announced the implementation of a new district model in an effort to improve community policing and enhance public safety. This model, which has been in development for over a year, will see the city divided into four districts, each with its own dedicated police team.
According to Chief Peter Sloly, the district model is a significant step towards modernizing the Ottawa Police Service and aligning it with best practices in community policing. He stated, “This model will allow us to better understand and respond to the unique needs of each community within our city.”
Under the new model, each district will have its own superintendent, who will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of their district. This will allow for a more localized approach to policing, with officers being able to build stronger relationships with community members and address specific issues within their district.
In addition, each district will have its own community police officers, who will work closely with community organizations and residents to identify and address concerns. This will help to bridge the gap between the police and the community, fostering a sense of trust and collaboration.
The district model also includes the creation of a new Community Safety Services Branch, which will focus on proactive and preventative measures to address community safety issues. This branch will work closely with community partners to develop and implement strategies to address crime and safety concerns.
The implementation of the district model is part of the Ottawa Police Service’s commitment to building a more inclusive and responsive police force. It is also in line with the recommendations of the 2019 Council-approved Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, which emphasized the importance of community policing and engagement.
The new district model will officially launch on July 5th, with the four districts being named Central, East, West, and South. The Ottawa Police Service is confident that this model will lead to improved communication, collaboration, and trust between the police and the community, ultimately making Ottawa a safer and more inclusive city for all.
