B.C.’s job slump continues with biggest losses in ‘Hollywood North’

British Columbia’s film industry, also known as “Hollywood North,” has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a significant loss of jobs. According to Statistics Canada, the province has experienced the biggest decline in employment in the film and television production industry compared to other provinces in Canada.

The latest data from the Labour Force Survey shows that between February and April of this year, BC lost 8,300 jobs in the film and television production industry. This represents a 43.5% decrease in employment, the largest decline among all provinces in Canada.

The impact of the pandemic on the film industry is evident in the number of productions that have been put on hold or cancelled. Many film and television projects have been forced to shut down due to safety concerns and travel restrictions. This has resulted in a significant loss of income for those working in the industry, including actors, crew members, and support staff.

The decline in employment in the film industry has also had a ripple effect on other sectors, such as hospitality and tourism. With fewer productions taking place, there is a decrease in demand for services such as catering, transportation, and accommodation, which are essential for film and television productions.

The BC government has recognized the impact of the pandemic on the film industry and has taken steps to support it. In March, the province announced a $2 million fund to help productions cover the costs of COVID-19 safety protocols. The government has also extended the Film and Television Tax Credit to provide additional support to the industry.

Despite these efforts, the future of the film industry in BC remains uncertain. With the pandemic still ongoing, it is unclear when productions will resume and when the industry will fully recover. However, industry experts remain hopeful that with the right support and safety measures in place, BC’s film industry will bounce back and continue to thrive as “Hollywood North.”
