Jodie Kidd, a well-known British model and television personality, has recently spoken out about the abuse she witnessed towards pub staff during her time working in the hospitality industry.
In an interview with The Independent, Kidd shared her experiences of working in a pub during her teenage years and the mistreatment she witnessed towards staff members. She described the behavior as “disgusting” and “unacceptable.”
Kidd recalled instances where customers would verbally and physically abuse staff members, often over minor issues such as a wrong drink order or a delay in service. She also mentioned that the abuse was not limited to just customers, but also from managers and owners towards their employees.
The former model expressed her disappointment in the lack of support and protection for pub staff, stating that it is a “tough job” and they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.
Kidd’s comments come at a time when the hospitality industry has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, with many pubs and restaurants struggling to stay afloat. The added stress and pressure on staff have only exacerbated the issue of abuse in the workplace.
According to a survey by the trade union Unite, 85% of hospitality workers have experienced verbal abuse from customers, and 60% have experienced physical abuse. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for action to be taken to address this issue.
In response to Kidd’s comments, a spokesperson for the British Beer and Pub Association stated that they do not condone any form of abuse towards staff and that they are working with the government and police to tackle the issue.
It is clear that more needs to be done to protect pub staff from abuse in the workplace. The hospitality industry must take a stand against this unacceptable behavior and ensure that their employees are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. As customers, we also have a responsibility to treat staff with kindness and understanding, especially during these challenging times.
Kidd’s words serve as a reminder that behind every pint poured and meal served, there are hardworking individuals who deserve to be treated with decency and respect. Let us all work towards creating a safer and more respectful environment for pub staff and all hospitality workers.
