Edmonton, Alberta – The search for a missing Edmonton teenager has come to a tragic end as authorities believe she has died.
According to the Edmonton Police Service, 17-year-old Jade Belcourt was last seen on June 19 in the area of 118 Avenue and 96 Street. Her family reported her missing on June 22.
After an extensive search and investigation, police have now announced that they believe Belcourt has passed away.
“Our thoughts are with Jade’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” said EPS spokesperson Scott Pattison in a press release.
The investigation into Belcourt’s disappearance began when her family reported her missing. Police conducted numerous interviews and searched multiple locations in an effort to locate her.
However, on July 2, police received information that led them to believe Belcourt had died. The exact circumstances of her death are still under investigation.
“We are working closely with the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death,” said Pattison.
The EPS is also asking anyone with information about Belcourt’s disappearance or death to come forward and contact them.
“We are still seeking information from the public to help us piece together the events leading up to Jade’s death,” said Pattison.
Belcourt’s family has been notified of the update in the case and are receiving support from victim services.
The EPS is also reminding the public that they can report any information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
As the investigation continues, the EPS is urging anyone with information to come forward and help bring closure to Belcourt’s family and loved ones.
