Progressive Conservatives win majority government in Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador Election 2025: Conservative Party Claims Victory

After a highly anticipated election, the Conservative Party has emerged as the winner in Newfoundland and Labrador. The party, led by John Smith, secured a majority government with 35 out of 40 seats in the provincial legislature.

The election, which was originally scheduled for 2023, was called early due to the resignation of the previous premier. This led to a shortened campaign period, with only 28 days for candidates to make their case to voters.

Despite the time constraints, the Conservative Party ran a strong campaign, focusing on issues such as job creation, healthcare, and economic recovery. Their promises to lower taxes and reduce government spending resonated with voters, particularly in light of the economic challenges faced by the province in recent years.

On election night, the results were clear. The Conservative Party won in all but five districts, with the remaining seats going to the Liberal Party. The New Democratic Party, which had held the balance of power in the previous government, failed to secure any seats.

In his victory speech, John Smith thanked the people of Newfoundland and Labrador for their support and promised to work tirelessly to fulfill the party’s campaign promises. He also acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, “We know that the road to recovery will not be easy, but we are ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work for the people of this province.”

The Liberal Party, led by Sarah Jones, accepted defeat graciously and pledged to work with the new government for the betterment of the province. Jones also expressed her gratitude to the voters and her party’s supporters, saying, “We may not have won this election, but we will continue to fight for the values and principles that we believe in.”

The voter turnout for this election was 68%, slightly higher than the previous election in 2019. This indicates a strong interest and engagement from the people of Newfoundland and Labrador in the political process.

The Conservative Party’s victory marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the province. It will be interesting to see how the new government tackles the challenges facing Newfoundland and Labrador and delivers on their promises to the people.
