Calgary Honors Canada’s Fallen Soldiers for 17th Year with Field of Crosses

For the 17th consecutive year, the city of Calgary has come together to remember and honor the brave soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The Field of Crosses, a memorial display of over 3,400 white crosses, has once again been set up along Memorial Drive to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers.

The Field of Crosses was first established in 2009 by Murray McCann, a local businessman and veteran, as a way to honor his fallen comrades and to remind the community of the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers. Since then, it has become a beloved tradition in Calgary, drawing in thousands of visitors each year.

This year’s display is particularly significant as it marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The crosses, each bearing the name of a fallen soldier, serve as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of never forgetting those who have served and given their lives for their country.

The Field of Crosses is not only a place for remembrance, but also a place for reflection and gratitude. Visitors are encouraged to walk among the crosses, read the names and pay their respects to the fallen soldiers. The display also includes a large Canadian flag and a plaque with the words “Lest We Forget”, serving as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men and women.

The annual Remembrance Day ceremony will take place at the Field of Crosses on November 11th, with a special tribute to the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The ceremony will include a reading of the names of all the soldiers honored in the display, as well as speeches and musical performances.

The Field of Crosses is a powerful symbol of the unity and gratitude of the Calgary community towards its fallen soldiers. It serves as a reminder that their sacrifices will never be forgotten and that their legacy will continue to live on. As we approach Remembrance Day, let us all take a moment to visit the Field of Crosses and pay our respects to those who have given their lives for our country. Lest we forget.
