Toronto Raptors’ rookie RJ Barrett is currently listed as day-to-day after suffering a sprained knee during a recent game against the Phoenix Suns.
The 19-year-old shooting guard was injured in the third quarter of the game on Tuesday night, after landing awkwardly on his left leg while attempting a layup. He was immediately taken out of the game and did not return.
According to the team’s medical staff, Barrett underwent an MRI on Wednesday which revealed a sprained knee. While the injury is not considered to be serious, the team has decided to take a cautious approach and list him as day-to-day.
Barrett’s absence was felt during the Raptors’ game against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night, as they suffered a 121-113 loss. The rookie has been a key player for the team this season, averaging 14.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.
Head coach Nick Nurse expressed his disappointment at losing Barrett for an undetermined amount of time, but also acknowledged the importance of prioritizing his health and recovery.
“We obviously want RJ back on the court as soon as possible, but we also want to make sure he is fully healed and ready to play at his best,” Nurse said in a statement.
Barrett’s injury comes at a crucial time for the Raptors, who are currently in the midst of a tight playoff race in the Eastern Conference. The team will have to rely on their depth and adapt their game plan in his absence.
The Raptors have not provided a timeline for Barrett’s return, but it is expected that he will be re-evaluated in the coming days. In the meantime, the team will continue to monitor his progress and provide updates as they become available.
Barrett, who was selected third overall in the 2019 NBA draft, has quickly become a fan favorite in Toronto and has shown great potential as a young player in the league. The Raptors and their fans are hopeful for a speedy recovery and return to the court for the promising rookie.
