The Brantford Bulldogs have made a significant trade, sending defenseman Sam McCue to the Ottawa 67s.
McCue, a 19-year-old from Sudbury, has been a key player for the Bulldogs since joining the team in 2018. In his two seasons with the team, he recorded 10 goals and 35 assists in 111 games.
The trade was announced on Tuesday, with the Bulldogs receiving a conditional 15th round pick in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection in exchange for McCue.
Bulldogs’ head coach, Dave Matsos, expressed his gratitude for McCue’s contributions to the team, stating, “Sam has been a valuable member of our team and we wish him all the best in Ottawa.”
The Ottawa 67s, who currently sit at the top of the OHL standings, are looking to bolster their defensive lineup with the addition of McCue. The team’s general manager, James Boyd, praised McCue’s skills and experience, saying, “We are excited to add a player of Sam’s caliber to our roster. He brings a strong defensive presence and will be a valuable asset to our team.”
McCue is also looking forward to joining the 67s, stating, “I am grateful for my time with the Bulldogs but I am excited for this new opportunity with the 67s. I am ready to contribute to their success.”
The Bulldogs, who currently sit in fifth place in the OHL’s Midwest Division, will continue their season without McCue. The team’s next game is on Friday against the Niagara IceDogs.
This trade marks a significant move for both teams as they continue their pursuit of the OHL championship. Only time will tell how McCue’s presence will impact the 67s and if the Bulldogs will be able to fill the void left by his departure.
