The study, which was published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, surveyed over 1,800 young adults and found a correlation between social media use and feelings of loneliness and depression.
According to the study, participants who reported spending more time on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, also reported feeling more isolated and unhappy. This was especially true for those who used social media as a means of comparison, constantly comparing their lives to others and feeling inadequate as a result.
Lead author of the study, Dr. Melissa G. Hunt, stated that “it’s not just the amount of time you spend on social media that matters, but also how you use it.” She explained that passive use, such as scrolling through feeds and consuming content without actively engaging, can lead to negative feelings, while active use, such as messaging and commenting, can have a more positive impact.
The study also found that taking a break from social media can have a positive effect on mental health. Participants who limited their social media use to 30 minutes per day for three weeks reported a significant decrease in feelings of loneliness and depression.
While the study does not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship between social media use and mental health, it does raise concerns about the potential negative effects of excessive social media consumption. It also highlights the importance of being mindful of how we use social media and taking breaks when needed.
In light of these findings, it is important for individuals to be aware of their social media habits and to use these platforms in a healthy and balanced way.
