The Winnipeg Goldeyes’ playoff run has come to an abrupt end after being swept in a two-game series by the Sioux Falls Canaries.
The Goldeyes, who finished the regular season with a record of 36-24, entered the American Association playoffs as the second seed in the North Division. However, they were unable to overcome the Canaries, who finished the regular season with a record of 31-29.
In the first game of the series on Wednesday, the Goldeyes fell behind early and were unable to catch up, ultimately losing 7-3. The Canaries’ offense was led by outfielder Logan Landon, who hit a three-run home run in the second inning.
The second game on Thursday was a closer battle, with the Goldeyes tying the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning. However, the Canaries responded with a run in the top of the ninth and held on for a 4-3 victory, securing their spot in the American Association Championship Series.
Despite the disappointing end to their season, the Goldeyes can still be proud of their accomplishments. This was their 27th consecutive season making the playoffs, the longest active streak in independent professional baseball.
Manager Rick Forney expressed his disappointment in the team’s early exit, but also acknowledged the strong performance of the Canaries. “They played better than us in the two games,” Forney said. “They deserved to win.”
The Canaries will now face the Milwaukee Milkmen in the American Association Championship Series, which begins on Saturday. The Milkmen swept the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in their two-game series.
As for the Goldeyes, they will now turn their attention to the offseason and begin preparations for the 2021 season. Despite the disappointment of this playoff loss, the team remains optimistic and determined to come back stronger next year.
