Toronto Police are currently searching for a suspect after a suspected hate-motivated assault at a restaurant in the Beaches neighborhood.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on Sunday evening at a restaurant on Queen Street East. The victim, a 29-year-old man, was dining with a friend when he was approached by a man who began making derogatory comments about his sexual orientation.
The suspect then proceeded to physically assault the victim, causing minor injuries. The victim was able to defend himself and the suspect fled the scene before police arrived.
The Toronto Police Hate Crime Unit has taken over the investigation and is appealing to the public for any information that may lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect.
In a statement, Detective Constable David Hopkinson said, “This type of behavior is completely unacceptable and has no place in our city. We are taking this incident very seriously and are committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice.”
The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s, approximately 5’10” with a medium build and short dark hair. He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern within the LGBTQ+ community, with many calling for increased awareness and action against hate-motivated crimes.
