Two individuals are currently in critical condition after a fire broke out in a home in North Winnipeg on Monday evening.
According to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS), crews were called to the scene on the 100 block of Lansdowne Avenue just before 7 p.m. Upon arrival, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-storey home.
Firefighters quickly worked to extinguish the blaze and search the residence for any occupants. Two individuals were found inside and were immediately transported to hospital in critical condition.
The WFPS confirmed that both individuals were the only occupants of the home at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Neighbours reported hearing loud explosions before seeing the flames, and some even attempted to enter the home to help before being turned back by the intense heat and smoke.
The fire caused significant damage to the home, with the roof collapsing and the interior heavily damaged. The estimated cost of the damage is currently unknown.
The WFPS is reminding the public to always have working smoke alarms in their homes and to have a fire escape plan in case of emergencies.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
