A driver in Ontario has been caught going more than 100 km/h in a school zone, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in the city of Toronto, where police officers were conducting speed enforcement in a designated school zone. The driver was clocked at a speed of 107 km/h, which is more than double the posted speed limit of 40 km/h in the area.
Upon being pulled over, the driver was issued a ticket for stunt driving, which carries a fine of up to $10,000 and an immediate seven-day license suspension. The vehicle was also impounded for seven days.
In a statement, Toronto Police Const. Alex Li said, “This is an extremely dangerous and reckless act, especially in a school zone where children are present. We urge all drivers to obey posted speed limits and be mindful of their surroundings, especially in areas where there are vulnerable road users.”
The incident serves as a reminder for drivers to always adhere to posted speed limits, especially in areas where there may be children present. The safety of all road users, particularly young students, should always be a top priority.
According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, speeding is a leading cause of collisions on the province’s roads, and it is estimated that it contributes to about 20% of all fatal collisions. In school zones, where there may be a higher concentration of pedestrians, the consequences of speeding can be even more severe.
As such, it is crucial for drivers to always be aware of their speed and adjust accordingly, especially in areas where there may be vulnerable road users. Let this incident serve as a reminder to all drivers to prioritize safety and follow posted speed limits at all times.
