A Toronto police officer has been arrested and charged after allegedly stealing alcohol from a store, according to the Toronto Police Service (TPS).
The incident occurred on Monday, December 14, at a store located in the area of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue. The officer, who has not been identified, was off-duty at the time.
According to TPS, the store’s security staff observed the officer taking a bottle of alcohol without paying for it. They immediately contacted the police and the officer was arrested at the scene.
The officer has been charged with theft under $5,000 and has been suspended with pay. TPS has also launched an internal investigation into the incident.
This is not the first time a Toronto police officer has been charged with theft. In 2019, an officer was charged with theft and breach of trust after allegedly stealing items from a store while on duty.
The TPS has reminded its officers that they are held to a high standard of conduct both on and off duty. Any allegations of misconduct will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate action will be taken.
The officer is scheduled to appear in court on January 28, 2022. TPS has not released any further information about the incident at this time.
This incident serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, including law enforcement officers. The TPS is committed to upholding the trust and confidence of the community and will continue to take swift action against any officer who violates that trust.
