Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin is hoping that current captain Auston Matthews will continue to make history for the team.
Sundin, who held the captaincy for 11 seasons, expressed his admiration for Matthews and his potential to break records in an interview with CTV News.
“I think Auston is a fantastic player and a great leader for the team,” Sundin said. “I hope he continues to break records and make his mark in the Maple Leafs’ history books.”
Matthews, who was named captain in October 2020, has already made a significant impact on the team. In his first season as captain, he led the Maple Leafs to their first division title in 21 years and set a new franchise record for most goals in a season by a center.
Sundin, who holds the record for most points in a season by a Maple Leafs player, believes that Matthews has the potential to surpass his record.
“I think Auston has the talent and drive to surpass my record,” Sundin said. “He has already shown that he is a dominant force on the ice and I have no doubt that he will continue to excel and make his mark in the team’s record book.”
Sundin also praised Matthews’ leadership skills and his ability to bring the team together.
“He is a natural leader and has the respect of his teammates,” Sundin said. “He has the ability to motivate and inspire the team, and I believe he will continue to do so in the years to come.”
As the Maple Leafs continue their quest for the Stanley Cup, Sundin believes that Matthews will play a crucial role in the team’s success.
“I have no doubt that Auston will continue to lead the team to great heights,” Sundin said. “I am excited to see what he will accomplish and I will be cheering him on every step of the way.”
