Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi has announced his intention to run for the Edmonton-Strathcona seat in the upcoming federal election, setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown with incumbent Conservative MP, Heather Smith.
In a statement released on Monday, Nenshi stated that he believes it is time for a change in Edmonton-Strathcona and that he is ready to bring his experience and leadership to the federal level.
“I have always been passionate about public service and making a positive impact in my community,” Nenshi said. “After much consideration and consultation with my family and supporters, I have decided to seek the nomination for the Edmonton-Strathcona seat.”
Nenshi, who has served as Calgary’s mayor since 2010, is known for his progressive policies and strong leadership during times of crisis. He has been praised for his handling of the 2013 floods and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
If elected, Nenshi would bring a wealth of experience to the federal government, having served as a consultant for the United Nations and as a professor at Mount Royal University.
His decision to run for the Edmonton-Strathcona seat has been met with excitement and support from his fellow Liberal party members.
“Naheed Nenshi is a proven leader who has dedicated his career to serving his community,” said Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau. “I am thrilled that he has chosen to run for the Edmonton-Strathcona seat and I have no doubt that he will be a strong voice for the people of Alberta in Ottawa.”
Nenshi’s opponent, Heather Smith, has held the Edmonton-Strathcona seat since 2015 and is known for her conservative views on issues such as taxation and immigration.
In a statement released in response to Nenshi’s announcement, Smith stated that she welcomes the competition and looks forward to a respectful and productive campaign.
“I believe in healthy competition and I am confident that the people of Edmonton-Strathcona will make the right decision for their community,” Smith said.
The federal election is set to take place on October 21, 2021, and all eyes will be on the Edmonton-Strathcona riding as Nenshi and Smith go head-to-head for the seat.
