PCs call on DFO to expand food fishery

The Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is urging the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to expand the food fishery program in the province.

In a recent statement, the PCs called on the DFO to increase the number of fish that can be caught under the food fishery program, as well as extend the season to allow for more opportunities for residents to participate.

According to the PCs, the food fishery is an important tradition in Newfoundland and Labrador, providing not only a source of food but also a cultural and social activity for many communities.

The current regulations for the food fishery allow for a maximum of five fish per person per day, with a total of 15 fish per boat. The season typically runs from July 4th to September 7th.

However, the PCs argue that these restrictions are too limiting, especially for families and individuals who rely on the food fishery as a source of sustenance. They are calling for an increase in the daily catch limit to 10 fish per person and 30 fish per boat, as well as an extension of the season to October 31st.

In their statement, the PCs also highlighted the economic benefits of expanding the food fishery. They believe that a longer and more generous season would attract more tourists to the province, boosting the local economy and supporting small businesses.

The PCs are not alone in their call for an expansion of the food fishery. The Newfoundland and Labrador Independent Fish Harvesters’ Association has also been advocating for changes to the program, citing the importance of the fishery to the livelihoods of many residents.

In response to the PCs’ statement, the DFO has stated that they are currently reviewing the food fishery program and will take the suggestions into consideration. However, they also emphasized the need to balance conservation and sustainability with the demands of the fishery.

As the debate continues, it is clear that the food fishery holds a special place in the hearts and lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The PCs’ call for an expansion of the program reflects the strong connection between the people and the sea, and the importance of preserving this tradition for future generations.
