The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched investigations into the deaths of two men in Toronto, which occurred separately.
According to the SIU, the first incident took place on Saturday evening in the area of Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue. Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers responded to a call regarding a man in distress. Upon arrival, they found a 33-year-old man on the ground, unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second incident occurred on Sunday morning in the area of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue. TPS officers were called to a residential building for a report of a man in crisis. When they arrived, they found a 29-year-old man on the balcony of an apartment unit. Despite attempts to communicate with him, the man fell from the balcony and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SIU has assigned six investigators and three forensic investigators to look into both incidents. They will be gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing any available video footage.
The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police officers in Ontario where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault. They are responsible for determining whether there are grounds to lay criminal charges against the officers involved.
Anyone with information about either of these incidents is urged to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529. The SIU is also asking anyone who may have video evidence related to these incidents to upload it through their website.
The SIU is committed to conducting thorough and impartial investigations into these tragic deaths. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
