York Regional Police detective charged with sexual assault, forcible confinement

A York Regional Police detective has been charged with sexual assault and forcible confinement, according to authorities.

The detective, whose name has not been released, has been suspended from duty with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.

The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred on March 30, 2021, while the detective was off-duty. The victim, a woman in her 30s, reported the incident to police on April 1.

The detective has been charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 26.

York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween released a statement expressing his disappointment and assuring the public that the matter is being taken seriously.

“The allegations against this officer are extremely concerning and do not reflect the values and standards of our organization,” MacSween said.

He also urged anyone with information about the incident or any other potential victims to come forward and speak to investigators.

The York Regional Police Professional Standards Bureau is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police.

The detective has been a member of the York Regional Police for 15 years and has been assigned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau since 2016.

The police service has not provided any further details about the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.

This is a developing story and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
