Canucks' Zadorov fined $5,000 for post-game crosscheck on Oilers' McDavid

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Nikita Zadorov has been fined $5,000 for a post-game crosscheck on Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid.

The incident occurred during the third period of Saturday’s game between the two teams. As the final buzzer sounded, Zadorov delivered a crosscheck to McDavid’s back, causing the Oilers captain to fall to the ice.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced the fine on Sunday, stating that Zadorov’s actions were a violation of Rule 59 (Cross-checking) and warranted a maximum fine under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

This is not the first time Zadorov has been disciplined for his on-ice behavior. In 2019, he was suspended for one game for an illegal check to the head of Boston Bruins forward David Krejci.

McDavid, who leads the league in points this season, did not appear to be injured from the crosscheck and was able to finish the game. However, the incident has sparked debate among fans and analysts about the level of physicality in the NHL and the need for stricter penalties for dangerous plays.

The Canucks have also faced criticism for their overall performance this season, currently sitting at the bottom of the North Division with a record of 16-20-3.

Zadorov has yet to comment on the fine, but the team released a statement expressing their disappointment in his actions and their commitment to upholding the league’s standards of sportsmanship.

The NHL has made it clear that they will not tolerate any form of dangerous play on the ice, and this fine serves as a reminder to all players to adhere to the rules and respect their opponents.

As the season continues, it is important for players to prioritize the safety of their fellow athletes and maintain the integrity of the game.
