The federal government has announced its plans to acquire the Quebec Bridge from Canadian National (CN) and invest $1 billion over the course of 25 years to ensure its safety and longevity.
The Quebec Bridge, which spans the St. Lawrence River between Quebec City and Lévis, has been a vital transportation link for over a century. However, it has faced numerous challenges, including a collapse during construction in 1907 and a tragic accident in 1916 that claimed the lives of 88 workers.
Despite ongoing maintenance and repairs, the bridge has continued to deteriorate, leading to concerns about its safety and the need for a long-term solution. This is where the federal government steps in.
Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced on Thursday that the government has reached an agreement with CN to acquire the bridge and take over its operations. The $1 billion investment will be used to rehabilitate and modernize the bridge, ensuring its safety and reliability for years to come.
In a statement, Alghabra emphasized the importance of the Quebec Bridge to the region’s economy and the need for a sustainable solution. “The Quebec Bridge is a vital link for the people and businesses of Quebec City and Lévis, and it is our responsibility to ensure its safety and longevity,” he said.
The federal government’s investment will be spread out over 25 years, with $100 million allocated for the first five years and $50 million per year for the remaining 20 years. This long-term approach will allow for thorough and comprehensive rehabilitation work, rather than quick fixes that may not address the underlying issues.
CN has also committed to providing technical expertise and support during the transition period, ensuring a smooth transfer of ownership and operations. The company will continue to operate the bridge until the transfer is complete, and will then provide ongoing maintenance and support services.
The acquisition of the Quebec Bridge by the federal government is a significant step towards ensuring the safety and reliability of this vital transportation link.
