The popular Patios and Parklets program is set to make a return to downtown Lethbridge in 2024, providing residents and visitors with a unique outdoor dining experience.
The program, which was first introduced in 2019, allows local businesses to expand their outdoor seating options by utilizing public spaces such as sidewalks and parking spots. This not only creates a vibrant and inviting atmosphere in the downtown core, but also supports the local economy by providing additional seating for customers.
According to the City of Lethbridge, the program was a huge success in its inaugural year, with over 30 businesses participating and an estimated $1.5 million in additional revenue generated. Due to its popularity, the program was extended in 2020 and 2021, and will now continue for the next three years.
Mayor Chris Spearman expressed his excitement for the return of the program, stating that it has been a valuable addition to the city’s downtown area. He also noted that the program aligns with the city’s goal of creating a more pedestrian-friendly and vibrant downtown core.
In order to participate in the program, businesses must apply for a permit and adhere to certain guidelines, including maintaining accessibility for pedestrians and ensuring the safety of customers. The city will also provide businesses with assistance in setting up their outdoor seating areas.
