The courtroom was filled with tension as arguments were heard in a civil suit filed by Belinda Stronach, the granddaughter of billionaire businessman Frank Stronach.
Belinda Stronach, who is also the daughter of Frank Stronach, is suing her father for $520 million, claiming that he mismanaged the family fortune and interfered with her inheritance.
The hearing, which took place on Tuesday, saw lawyers for both sides presenting their arguments to Justice Barbara Conway of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
Belinda Stronach’s lawyer, Jonathan Lisus, argued that Frank Stronach had breached his fiduciary duties as a father and trustee by using the family fortune for his own personal gain. Lisus also claimed that Frank Stronach had made decisions that were not in the best interest of the family business, Magna International.
On the other hand, Frank Stronach’s lawyer, Paul Le Vay, argued that Belinda Stronach’s claims were baseless and that she had already received a significant amount of money from her father. Le Vay also stated that Frank Stronach had always acted in the best interest of the family and the business.
The dispute between father and daughter has been ongoing for several years, with Belinda Stronach initially filing the lawsuit in 2018. The case has garnered significant media attention due to the high-profile nature of the family and their business empire.
During the hearing, Justice Conway raised concerns about the amount of time and money being spent on the case, stating that it was “unfortunate” that the family could not resolve their issues outside of court.
The hearing ended with Justice Conway reserving her decision, meaning that she will take time to review the arguments presented before making a ruling.
This civil suit is just one chapter in the ongoing family feud between Belinda Stronach and her father. It remains to be seen how the court will rule and if the family will be able to reconcile their differences.
