Blockade briefly stops Pride Parade in downtown Winnipeg

The annual Pride Parade in downtown Winnipeg was briefly halted on Sunday afternoon due to a blockade set up by a group of protesters.

The parade, which celebrates the LGBTQ+ community and promotes inclusivity and diversity, was making its way down Portage Avenue when it was stopped by a group of individuals who had formed a human chain across the street.

According to witnesses, the protesters were holding signs and chanting slogans, causing a disruption to the parade and its participants.

Police were called to the scene and were able to negotiate with the protesters to remove the blockade and allow the parade to continue.

The organizers of the Pride Parade released a statement expressing disappointment and frustration with the interruption, but also emphasizing the importance of peaceful protest and the right to freedom of speech.

“We respect the right to protest, but we also believe in the importance of celebrating and promoting love and acceptance,” the statement read.

The protesters, who have not been identified, have not released a statement explaining their actions.

The Pride Parade continued on its route, with thousands of people in attendance, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, allies, and supporters.

This is not the first time the Pride Parade in Winnipeg has faced opposition. In 2019, a group of anti-LGBTQ+ protesters attempted to disrupt the parade, but were quickly removed by police.

Despite the brief interruption, the Pride Parade was able to continue and spread its message of love and acceptance to the city of Winnipeg.
