VANCOUVER – After a nail-biting playoff series between the Vancouver Canucks and the St. Louis Blues, BC Attorney General David Eby has fulfilled his end of a friendly bet with Missouri State Senator Caleb Rowden.
The bet, made on Twitter during the first round of the playoffs, saw Eby agreeing to wear a St. Louis Blues jersey and sing the team’s victory song if the Canucks were to lose the series. In return, Rowden promised to wear a Canucks jersey and sing “O Canada” if the Blues were to lose.
And after the Canucks’ heartbreaking loss in game seven on Friday, Eby took to Twitter to announce that he would be honoring his bet.
“What in the name of Luongo was I thinking?” Eby tweeted, referencing former Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo. “But a bet is a bet. I’ll be wearing a Blues jersey and singing their victory song. Congrats to the Blues and good luck in the next round.”
Eby followed through on his promise on Monday, donning a Blues jersey and singing “Gloria” in a video posted to Twitter.
But the friendly wager wasn’t just about good sportsmanship. Eby and Rowden also used the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for mental health initiatives in both British Columbia and Missouri.
In a joint statement, the two politicians said they were “proud to use this bet as a way to support mental health initiatives in our respective provinces.”
They encouraged others to join in and donate to mental health organizations in their own communities.
The Canucks may have lost the series, but Eby and Rowden have shown that friendly competition can also bring people together for a good cause.
