Two men were seriously injured after falling from a 20-foot scaffolding deck in North York, according to paramedics.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at a construction site near Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue. Emergency crews were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m.
According to Toronto Paramedic Services, the two men, believed to be in their 30s, fell from the scaffolding and landed on the ground below. They were both conscious and breathing when paramedics arrived.
One of the men suffered serious injuries to his head and chest, while the other sustained serious injuries to his back and legs. Both were rushed to a trauma centre for treatment.
The Ministry of Labour has been notified and is investigating the incident. It is not yet clear what caused the men to fall from the scaffolding.
The construction site has been shut down as authorities continue to investigate. The Ministry of Labour will determine if any safety violations were involved.
This is not the first time a construction accident has occurred in the city. In 2019, there were 1,000 reported injuries in the construction industry in Ontario, according to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
The incident serves as a reminder for employers and workers to prioritize safety measures on construction sites. Proper training, equipment, and supervision are crucial in preventing accidents and ensuring the well-being of workers.
As the investigation continues, our thoughts are with the injured workers and their families. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
