The St. John’s College (SJC) Bantam football team has emerged victorious at the Barbarian Cup, solidifying their position as a top contender in the local sports scene.
The Bantams, led by head coach Mark Thompson, put on a stellar performance at the annual tournament held at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre. The team faced tough competition from other local schools, but their determination and skill ultimately led them to the championship title.
The SJC Bantams’ journey to the top began with a strong start in the round-robin portion of the tournament. They dominated their opponents, scoring a total of 85 points and only allowing 14 points against them. This impressive performance earned them a spot in the semi-finals, where they faced off against the Brantford Collegiate Institute (BCI) Mustangs.
In a nail-biting game, the Bantams managed to secure a 14-7 victory over the Mustangs, securing their spot in the finals against the Assumption College Lions. The championship game was a close one, with both teams putting up a tough fight. However, the Bantams’ determination and teamwork prevailed, leading them to a 21-14 win and the coveted Barbarian Cup.
Coach Thompson praised his team’s hard work and dedication, stating, “I am incredibly proud of these young athletes. They have put in countless hours of practice and it has paid off in this tournament. They truly deserve this win.”
