B.C. man 'attacked suddenly' by adult grizzly near Alberta border: RCMP

A British Columbia man was suddenly attacked by an adult grizzly bear near the Alberta border, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon while the man was hiking in the backcountry near the Alberta border, approximately 60 kilometers east of Fort Nelson.

According to the RCMP, the man was walking alone when he suddenly encountered the grizzly bear. The bear then attacked the man, causing serious injuries.

The man was able to call for help using his satellite phone and was airlifted to a hospital in Fort Nelson for treatment. He is currently in stable condition.

The RCMP and conservation officers are investigating the incident and have closed the area to the public as a precaution.

This is not the first time a grizzly bear attack has occurred in the area. In 2019, a woman was attacked by a grizzly bear while hiking in the same area.

Conservation officers are reminding the public to take precautions when hiking in bear country, such as making noise, traveling in groups, and carrying bear spray.

Grizzly bears are a protected species in British Columbia and it is important for hikers to be aware of their surroundings and take necessary precautions to avoid any potential encounters.

The RCMP is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
