The westbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway were closed at York Street on Tuesday evening after a fiery collision occurred.
According to Toronto police, the incident took place around 6:30 p.m. when a vehicle collided with a transport truck, causing a fire to break out. The truck was carrying a load of lumber, which contributed to the intensity of the flames.
Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to the scene and were able to extinguish the fire. However, the westbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway were closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the debris and assess the damage.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the collision. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Drivers were advised to avoid the area and find alternate routes as the closure caused significant traffic delays. The lanes were reopened around 10 p.m. once the scene was cleared.
This is not the first time a collision has caused a major disruption on the Gardiner Expressway. In 2019, a similar incident occurred when a transport truck carrying propane tanks collided with a car, causing a massive explosion and shutting down the expressway for several hours.
The Gardiner Expressway is a major artery in Toronto, connecting the downtown core to the western suburbs. It is crucial for commuters and businesses, and any closures or delays can have a significant impact on the city.
As always, drivers are reminded to exercise caution and follow traffic laws to prevent accidents and keep our roads safe.
