Inquest into beating death of man at Don Jail 15 years ago will be held next month

An inquest into the tragic death of a man at the Don Jail 15 years ago will finally be held next month, bringing some closure to his family and loved ones.

The inquest, which is set to begin on June 7, will examine the circumstances surrounding the death of 30-year-old William Ryan, who died after being beaten by correctional officers at the Don Jail on September 9, 2006.

Ryan, who was serving a sentence for robbery, was found unresponsive in his cell after being involved in a physical altercation with several officers. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The inquest, which was initially scheduled to take place in 2008, was repeatedly delayed due to legal proceedings and other factors. However, after years of waiting, Ryan’s family will finally have the opportunity to hear the details of what happened to their loved one and seek justice.

According to the Office of the Chief Coroner, the inquest will examine the events leading up to Ryan’s death, including the use of force by correctional officers, the adequacy of medical care provided to Ryan, and the policies and procedures in place at the Don Jail at the time.

The inquest will also hear from witnesses, including correctional officers, medical professionals, and other individuals involved in the incident.

Ryan’s family has been vocal about their desire for answers and accountability in the years since his death. They hope that the inquest will shed light on the circumstances surrounding his death and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

The inquest will be presided over by Dr. David Eden, a regional supervising coroner for the East Region. It is expected to last for approximately two weeks and will be open to the public.

While nothing can bring back their loved one, Ryan’s family is hopeful that the inquest will provide them with some closure and bring about much-needed changes to the correctional system.

As the inquest approaches, the family and loved ones of William Ryan continue to mourn his loss and await the truth about what happened to him on that fateful day at the Don Jail.
