WestJet mechanics hit airline with 72-hour strike notice

WestJet Mechanics Issue 72-Hour Strike Notice to Airline

In a move that could potentially disrupt travel plans for thousands of passengers, WestJet mechanics have issued a 72-hour strike notice to the airline. The notice was issued by the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Association (AMEA) and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), representing approximately 3,000 WestJet mechanics.

The strike notice comes after months of unsuccessful negotiations between the unions and the airline. The main points of contention include wages, working conditions, and job security. The unions have accused WestJet of not taking their concerns seriously and failing to address their demands.

In a statement, the unions said, “We have been negotiating with WestJet for over a year and have made every effort to reach a fair and reasonable agreement. Unfortunately, the airline has not been willing to meet us halfway and address our concerns.”

The strike notice means that if an agreement is not reached within the next 72 hours, the mechanics will be legally allowed to walk off the job. This could result in flight cancellations and delays, as well as disruptions to WestJet’s operations.

In response to the strike notice, WestJet has stated that they are committed to reaching a fair and reasonable agreement with the unions. They have also assured passengers that they are working on contingency plans to minimize the impact of any potential strike.

This is not the first time WestJet has faced labour disputes. In 2018, the airline faced a strike by its pilots, which was averted at the last minute after the two sides reached a tentative agreement.

The potential strike by WestJet mechanics comes at a time when the airline industry is already struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With travel restrictions and reduced demand for air travel, any disruptions to WestJet’s operations could have a significant impact on the airline’s financial stability.

As the 72-hour deadline approaches, both sides are under pressure to come to a resolution. Passengers are advised to monitor their flight status and make alternate travel arrangements if necessary.
